Green Esteem
Green - we can't help but think about it. The impact that the color "green" has made on design in the last decade can't be ignored. Today, Green is commonly associated with organic, eco-friendly, nature-oriented, and healthy-use products on the market. But beyond the association to "green living," the secondary color green has become primary to many marketing and advertising campaigns across a number of industries. The popularity of lime green, in company logos, such as H&R Block, the new Volkswagen Bug and the Apple iMac, helped opened up the flood of green now seen in product branding.
In the book, The Greening of America, published in 1969, author Charles Reich predicted many of today's current cultural trends. The book illustrated a multi-layered social revolution that included a transformation of society's relationship with the environment. In essence, Reich predicted that eco-friendly lifestyles would eventually become highly esteemed. As the first major city to adopt recycling, Seattle has walked in step with Reich's predictions by progressively embracing green values for years. Now, in line with the growing eco-friendly culture, many mainstream businesses nationwide are adopting a similar "green esteem" mentality by incorporating green, a representative eco-friendly color, to their company identities. For example, McDonald's is promoting its new "green" health conscious menu. General Electric shows its eco-friendliness with the use of green plants and flowers to market its "Ecomagination" program.
Whether this is a passing design trend or a shift in environmental awareness, we support this growing "green esteem" as a symbol of greater overall awareness in the business community for personal health, community, and the planet. As we move forward into 2007, and the years to come, Eben Design plans to focus on helping clients connect with the increasingly eco-friendly culture by using our Branding Powered Marketing Strategy. Here are three clients whose "green esteem" has increased - thanks to the team at Eben Design:
Printing Control
Recently, Eben Design created a new website for Printing Control, an eco-friendly printing company in Tukwila, WA. Printing Control is the only commercial printer in the greater Seattle area that has been given a 5 Star rating given by EnviroStars. Printing Control has used soy based-inks for the past five years, which dramatically reduces the amount of chemicals needed to clean its presses. Printing Control also recently invested in a distiller that purifies waste coming off the press, enabling the reuse of over 70% of the solvents used in the printing process. Their new interactive website demonstrates the company's capabilities and environmental leadership within the community.
WSIPC
Eben Design has partnered with Washington School Information Processing Cooperative (WSIPC) to re-brand its WESPC Student/Finance management software. As a technology-based company, WSIPC works with 90% of Washington State School Districts and aims to reduce the amount of paper used in schools by making information accessible online. Eben Design used Knightkote Matte recycled papers to print WESPC print collateral with an eco-friendly design.
Alliance Nursing
The color green is also the primary color in the branding for our client, Alliance Nursing. For the past 16 years, Alliance Nursing has been dedicated in providing medically intensive home care and services in Western Washington. Its socially conscious outlook helped us create their green-toned "nurture/nature" logo that features a mother and baby bird in a nest with twigs. Thankfully, Alliance Nursing was spared from statewide in-home care budget cuts and remains the largest home health care provider in Washington State.
In spirit of the "green esteem," here are a few fun Eben Design coincidences:
- Founder Eben Greene grew up in Greene County, Ohio.
- Eben also attended Evergreen State College in Olympia on an environmental scholarship.
- He has lived and worked in Green Lake for the past 12 years.
